If you’ve come this far, then I probably don’t have to give you so much by way of motivation. I’m going to do it anyway though because there’s always a point where you hit “the wall”.
Next time you feel you can’t go any further, have a look at these reasons for why you should go running (and keep doing it), and hopefully, it’ll put you right back on track.
1) You Can Eat More
Think about it, when you go running you’re burning carbs. Surely that means that you can eat more than you would otherwise, right? Yup. If that’s not the best reasons for why you should go running, I don’t know what is.
I’m not saying that you should be eating a load of junk food, but a couple of taste selects might just be the perfect thing to add to your daily menu. Check out some of these incredibly tasty meals and how to make them. Then you just need to make sure that you actually go for a run!
2) Running Bulks Up your Stamina (In More Than One Area)
By going running frequently, your stamina will gradually increase. That’s not just in the running department, it’s also in practically every other department as well. You’ll be able to last longer doing the things you love, and that doesn’t even include the mental health benefits which come with it.
If you have suffered from depression in the past or had problems with anxiety, running has been shown to boost confidence and self-belief. Part of it is the reason that you’re accomplishing something, part of it is the health benefits you’re going through. Running is the best.
3) Running Lets You Discover New Places
Running is the perfect excuse to get out of your bubble and explore new places. How about checking out your city in a little bit more detail, or maybe you might be visiting somewhere on holiday and can explore an entirely new area? Wherever you are, running doesn’t just have to mean following the same routes on repeat, it can also mean exploring new and interesting places, every day.
4) You Exercise More Than Just Part of Your Body
Running is one of the best ways to keep your body in tip-top shape. When you run, you use over 200 muscles to take a step. That’s a lot of muscles being moved around. You’ll also be increasing blood flow, reducing blood pressure, and giving a boost to your metabolism (which also means you can eat more!).
5) Running is Free
You don’t have to pay for those expensive (too-expensive) gyms out there, running can be done practically anywhere. Moreover, instead of being stuck inside of the same boring room whilst you run, you’ll be jetting past tonnes of new and interesting sights (or you can be).
However, that being said, there are a few things you might have to spend some money on, one of which is probably going to be liked more by some people than others…
6) You can Get New Shoes
I’m a girl and as a girl, I love shoes! I spend a lot of time traveling, so, unfortunately, I don’t manage to constantly maintain a mountain of shoes like some people out there. I do, however, always try to make sure to bring along my best runners.
There may very well not be a particular best running shoe out there, but they have done studies which have shown that running in different shoes has different results. Some shoes you are less likely to get injured in – depending on what type of sport you are doing. Plus, if anyone asks why you’re buying another pair of shoes, you just tell them that I said it’s important for running.
7) It Provides Opportunities to Help Others
A lot of runners will take part in competitions and charity runs. Most large cities have these and they’re the perfect opportunity to help give back or provide a little help to those less fortunate than you. For instance, during the London Marathon, you can actually sponsor a charity of your choice. This is usually the same for any marathon, and there are a lot of them out there all around the world!
If you’re looking for a reason Why You Should Go Running, then this should be towards the top of your list, I think.
8) You Can Meet New People…
I’ve written about this before. It’s a tough-y, especially when you’re used to running on your own like I am. The thing is though, that running with a group can be a great way to keep you motivated and moving. If it were a choice between an MP3 and a couple of my friends, I reckon that most of the time I would probably pick my friends.
One thing I don’t like about running with a group is that you usually lose your freedom when it comes to picking where you’re going. If you’re ok with that though, it might be perfect for you.
9) …But It Also Gives You Alone Time
On the flip side, running is the perfect excuse to get out of the house on your own and spend a bit of time inside your head. ‘Nough said.
10) Makes You Sleep for Longer and Better
The final reason on this list is very possibly the most important. Running helps you to sleep for longer and have better quality REM cycles. That’s deep sleep to me and you. It does this not only because your body needs it more, but because you’re also soaking up all that super healthy Vitamin D whilst you’re out in the sun, which has a lot of other health benefits as well.
What You Waiting For?
So, what are you waiting for? If this list of reasons for why you should go running hasn’t motivated you to get up off that couch, what will? It’s great for your body, your mind, and it means you can dig into even more delicious food! Don’t make me ask you twice.
